Five to Do … If You Love Video Games

If you love video games, rack up the points at these five destinations.

Ground Kontrol

Ground Kontrol is a mecca of old-school arcade games. From Mario Brothers to Bubble Bobble to Centipede to Frogger, they’ve got a wide selection of classic arcade games. They also have Dance Dance Revolution, pinball and Rock Band. The last Wednesday of each month is their Free Play Party. For a cover charge at the door, you can game all night long for no additional charge.

Portland Retro Gaming Expo

Sept. 18-19 is the Portland Retro Gaming Expo. Admission ranges from $10-$45, depending on the pass you buy. There you will find retro video game tournaments, vendors, costume contests, auctions and live speakers.

Video Games Live

Video Games Live is an amazing experience that combines the love of video games, with the elegance of classical music. The Oregon Symphony performs theme music from a variety of video games, including Final Fantasy, Sonic the Hedgehog and God of War. The show is currently touring the country, so keep tabs on their website to see when they’ll be in Portland again.

Video Game Wizards

If you want to unload your video games, or buy new ones, Video Game Wizards seems to be the place to go. They also sell movies, and offer disc-cleaning services. Their staff is friendly and the customers keep coming back for more.

Ultrazone

True, laser tag isn’t really a video game per se, but when you’re playing in a 5,000-square-foot arena, it will feel like the most realistic first-person shooter you’ve ever played. And don’t worry if your thumbs start twitching for some joystick action, Ultrazone has an arcade, too.
