Five to Do … When You Want to Volunteer

Hands on Greater Portland
Hands on Greater Portland is there to help you pick an organization to donate your time to. They have groups for kids, teens, corporate events, special events and even resources for teachers. Whether you want to volunteer for a couple hours, or join an on-going project, there’s something for everyone.
Portland Rescue Mission
You don’t have to be religious to volunteer at Portland Rescue Mission. Though the organization is faith-based, they can always use volunteers to answer phones, perform office duties, serve meals or sort donated goods.
Animal Aid
There is a wide array of jobs that need volunteers at Animal Aid. They need foster families for dogs, caregivers for shelter cats, event coordinators and special project teams. Even young kids can volunteer, as long as they have their parents’ cooperation. They also need volunteers for adoption counseling, but that requires more extensive training first.
Habitat For Humanity
Some of the projects under way with Habitat For Humanity include houses at Jubilee Commons, Lents Landing and Rivergate Commons. You can volunteer on your own or get some friends together and volunteer in a group.
Oregon Food Bank
Oregon Food Bank strives to fight hunger. Volunteers are needed to repackage food donations, lead nutrition education classes and workshops and help at fundraising events, among other things. Until the end of 2010, for every box of fruit you purchase, Naumes will match your purchase by donating a box of fruit to the Oregon Food Bank.
