Off-the-Grid Galleries

The local gallery scene has a James Dean complex … and that’s a good thing.

Given the deficits in the current cultural economy, Portland is seeing a significant proliferation of new art galleries and exhibition spaces cropping up all around town.

We hit the streets on the east side of the Willamette to talk with some of these new faces on the scene like Jason Doizé of FalseFront, Alicia Johnson of Alicia Blue Gallery, May Barruel of Nationale and Tamar Monhait of The Vestibule at Disjecta.

Besides these programs, there are several other notables bringing their unique aesthetics to the scene and filling a gap for both displaced artists and the vast population of Northwest creatives:

  1. What a great piece on the guys and gals that bring you very alternative art here in Portland. They are sometimes such a breath of fresh air in these economic times…actually at any time. Keep all the great work coming!!!
