Only 10 percent of Capitol Hill Elementary 350 students walk or bike to school

Capitol Hill Elementary has one of the lowest bike and walk “mode shares” of the 72 schools participating in the Safe Routes to School program – only 10 percent of the school’s 350 students walk or bike. “Part of it is there are no sidewalks,” said Patti Henry, the parent of a 3rd-grader.

I rode my bike every single day: elementary, junior, and high school,

Twice a week, Henry also has to be at work by 7:30 a.m., which makes it difficult for her to walk or bike the 1½-mile distance with her daughter.

“I rode my bike every single day: elementary, junior, and high school,” Henry said. “The fact that my daughter doesn’t – I’m really struggling with it.”
